JOINT BASE LANGLEY-EUSTIS, Va. - As the petty officer of the watch during Joint Task Force Civil Support’s 244th Navy birthday celebration, U.S. Navy Logistics Specialist 2nd Class Tyler Hearn strikes eight bells. This tradition stems back to the days when Seamen didn’t have personal time pieces. Eight bells signifies the end of a four-hour watch, with each bell signifying 30-minute increments. The theme of this year’s celebration, “No Higher Honor,” originates from a quote by Lt. Cmdr. Robert Copeland, commanding officer of the World War II destroyer USS Samuel B. Roberts (DDE-413).
